Tennessee whiskyWe were lucky enough to attend a George Dickel Tennessee Whisky tasting and dinner at MCP in midtown Manhattan. It was an intimate gathering of around 20 whiskey enthusiasts.

Not only did we sample the complete collection of Dickel Whiskey, including their new “foundation recipe” George Dickel No. 1 Foundation Recipe, we also tasted a few Dickel cocktails and had some fun learning to cook corn in various ways.

The white whiskey category can be a tough sell for some drinkers because without the aging process they can be on the harsher side. However, George Dickel No. 1’s chill charcoal filtration system created a surprisingly smooth, creamy, sweet, and grain-forward spirit, with a nose reminiscent of popcorn. What makes this filtration system interesting is that the charcoal is completely saturated instead of relying on a drip process.

The efficacy of the filtration is obvious: more surface area touches the charcoal and the spirit becomes more refined. This white corn whisky stands as one of the most easy-drinking white whiskies we have tried. It also worked quite well in the cocktails presented (a recipe for our favorite summery “No. 1 Cooler” is below).

At a retail price of around $22 per bottle, Dickel #1 has tremendous value and would be a welcome exploration for many whisky drinkers.

George Dickel White Corn Whisky1.5 oz. George Dickel No. 1
.75 oz. Lime Juice
.75 oz. Simple Syrup
3 Slices of Cucumbers
6 Mint leaves
Pinch of Salt
