American Pharaoh Triple CrownWith a storm rumbling toward Pimlico and a wet track, Kentucky Derby 141 winner American Pharaoh won the 140th Preakness Stakes .He won the race by a dominating seven lengths, beating out Tale of Verve and Divining Rod.

With Preakness Stakes being the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes will be be the deciding race in three weeks on June 6 at Belmont Park in New York.

With jockey Victor Espinoza at the helm, American Pharoah will attempt to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. He is the 14th horse since Affirmed to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and third in the last four years. American Pharaoh’s is trained by Bob Baffert and owned by Ahmed Zayat, Zayat Stables, LLC

The Preakness Stakes was held today in Baltimore. Because of the recent protests and unrest which placed the city in the national spotlight, Baltimore has suffered an emotional and economic toll.

Preakness Stakes American Pharoah Bob BaffertSal Sinatra, the general manager of the Maryland Jockey Club, which oversees the Pimilico, said “This year’s Preakness, because of the unrest in Baltimore, I think is even more special … it’s something that the city needs to bring a little calming effect to everybody.”

The city lost millions of dollars in tourist revenue during the unrest, but reports indicate that Preakness ticket sales didn’t seem to be affected.
