We bring you this first interview of it’s kind with Tim Smith the week of the premiere of Moonshiners, which had 1.73 million viewers for the first episode, 3.2 million viewers for the 2nd episode. Additionally, the 2nd run of the first episode this past week drew another 2.2 million viewers!
For those of you who have been asking, “Is this show real? Are they really moonshining on Moonshiners and why aren’t they getting arrested?” we have a bit more insight for you from this interview.
In this interview, Tim also discusses the history of moonshine, why it is becoming a lost art, and shares his wisdom and stories.
Other real life characters in this reality type show include ABC law enforcement agent Jesse Tate and Tim’s team of “Tickle” and his son J.T.

Tim tells us he was working on the idea for this show for a long time. He also credits the birth of the show from others he met “at the right place at the right time.”
The last part of the inspiration for making this a show came when his father passed away. And around the same time moonshiners Barney Barnwell and Popcorn Sutton passed away.
Tim then believed this was his time to transition from being a moonshiner to legal moonshiners and distiller.

I’m enjoying the show. I really don’t understand why someone would pay $40-50 a gallon ($8-10/bottle) for unaged liquor of questionable quality though. For that price I’d rather buy a bottle of legal bourbon. I really don’t like that these “moonshiners” are doing it for the money. If they were after it for tradition they’d use small stills like they did in the 1800’s.. and make it for just family and friends. I hate seeing sugar added too..

To my mind, if any “legalization” needs to occur 1st, it should be home distillation of spirits….not pot…not gay marriage…but distillation. Imagine lightly regulated (mainly to ensure basic safety standards) home distillers who no longer fear the law…the boom in the microbrew business began with home brewing….can you imagine the innovation and unique spirits that would spring forth from a home distillation bonanza? I’d sign on to such an idea anywhere anytime….it just makes sense. Legalization of distillation with very light, minimal regulations to ensure basic safety would drive most of these mooshiners to produce better whiskey, for a better price.

The show is interesting. But I have a question, they have video proof of these guys moonshining. Why is the tv show not being used as evidence against them? They KNOW they are doing it. Even with fake names they’d be able to recognize the people, wouldn’t they?

I just have to say that you all done a fairly decent job of acting, but come on guys. Get real for once and show the world how it really is around here. I live close by and know this is a total crock of BS. Good acting though. Gongrats on that one!!

He’s the fire Chief, making moonshine, with his face on TV, and we’re supposed to believe that the ABC agent ISN”T coming to get him?
Unfortunately, I love the show, i just don’t believe a damm bit of it.

My family comes from Harlan County, Ky and moonshining runs strong in my blood. It’s nice to see my heritage on TV. As for Jesse, all I can say is if I were doing something illegal, Jesse’s the man I’d want on my tail. With an idiot like that after you, you’d never worry about getting caught.

The show is about what Tim used to do for a living.I guess you could say it is fake but the characters are real. He is making the transition to becoming legal.The show is great and good luck pursuing your dream.Don’t get caught before you get legal lol.
