For those of you who have been asking, “Is this show real? Are they really moonshining on Moonshiners and why aren’t they getting arrested?” we have a bit more insight for you from this interview.

How do you make moonshine? Tim Smith Moonshiners

In this interview, Tim also discusses the history of moonshine, why it is becoming a lost art, and shares his wisdom and stories.

Other real life characters in this reality type show include ABC law enforcement agent Jesse Tate and Tim’s team of “Tickle” and his son J.T.

At BourbonBlog.com, we are curious who YOU are rooting for and what do you think of the show? Post your reply in comments below.

Tim tells us he was working on the idea for this show for a long time. He also credits the birth of the show from others he met “at the right place at the right time.”

The last part of the inspiration for making this a show came when his father passed away. And around the same time moonshiners Barney Barnwell and Popcorn Sutton passed away.

Tim then believed this was his time to transition from being a moonshiner to legal moonshiners and distiller.

With this the new spotlight, and the goal of owning his own legal distillery and/or his own brand of moonshine, Tim invites you to visit his website TimSmithMoonshine.com .

We congratulate Tim, the complete cast, creators and producers on the success this new show. And Tim, we’ll look forward to tasting your moonshine!

I grew up and went to school in this area. It does happen, similiar to shown. For those of you who want to know why they aren’t arresting them, they haven’t shown every step of the process, that means there is not conclusive evidence to convict. That being said, I am not sure they are acutually making real shine, because I have not seen every step or every ingredient. I know they are representing the real story of shining. And being from that area, those stills could be anywhere! Do love the show and love the history I see in it.

We live near Climax, VA and I can tell you with 100% accuracy, the show itself is 100% fake, the people are real, but that is as far as the realism goes. Tim is going legal and the show is more a promo for his legal “moonshine” and provides background on him, his family and his heritage of moonshining. Did you really think he and Tickle were actually running White Lightening in his old muscle car? A real moonshiner with a real “backwoods” still would NOT go on National Television and divulge every aspect of his life! From the show aspect, he would be looking at a minimum of 10 felonies from just what they’ve aired! And it’s completely irrelevant that they are not showing the “entire” stilling process. They are showing enough for ATF agents to arrest him!
That said, I still enjoy watching the show.

Hey, everyone with any common sense knows ‘Moonshiners’ is a documentary. I like the show. And yes, Jesse Tate does not seem all that quick.

Luv to see my back yard on tv. The first show about the south without alot of holier than though liberal judgement about the area and the people, That is a big reason why people are watching. Good Luck Tim and Tickle dont get caught before you can hit the straight and narrow. I hate to say this but Jesse comes off like your greasy used car salesmen. I am sure he has plenty of informants and other stuff going on as well. VA. version of Bad Lt.

I love this show even though I know the actual moonshining part is fake. I’m bummed the last episode airs tonight. Wonder if there are any more episodes planned…? BTW the parts of the show with Jesse & the ABC are really boring.

This is one of the best shows on TV. I hope to get over to that part of the country one day and meet Tim and Tickle. Hell yeah, I loves me some moonshine!

  9. Matilda

I fast forward past the parts with the Jesse the agents, because that is very boring. Go Tim and Tickle! I am for the moonshiners, it is VERY interesting to learn about the history of it.
    RIP Popcorn!
