Eastern Light Distilling Secures $60 Million for Kentucky’s Largest Dedicated Contract Distillery

Eastern Light Distilling tells BourbonBlog.com it has now secured more than $60 million in financing to accelerate construction of what the company says will become Kentucky’s largest dedicated contract distillery in Morehead.

The milestone advances a project BourbonBlog has followed since 2023 in this story, with plans to produce whiskey for independent spirits brands in Morehead, Kentucky.

Led by co-founders Cordell Lawrence and master distiller Caleb Kilburn, Eastern Light is developing a 230-acre bourbon campus featuring a 50,000-square-foot distillery with a planned production capacity exceeding 125,000 barrels annually.

Eastern Light Reaches $60 Million Financing Goal: What Has Changed?

Eastern Light’s distillery was announced in 2023, and the company celebrated its groundbreaking in 2024. The latest announcement is not the launch of a new project, but a significant financial development for one already underway.

The company has now secured $23.1 million in private investment, enabling it to obtain additional financing and exceed its $60 million capital goal.

The financing package includes:

• $23.1 million in private investment from family offices, individual investors and investment funds.
• USDA Rural Development-backed financing through Magnolia Bank.
• Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing through Avrio CleanFund.

The combined financing package will help Eastern Light accelerate construction of its new distillery.

Importantly, the company has not raised the entire $60 million through private equity investment alone. The total represents a combination of private investment and additional financing.

Lexington-based Gray Construction is overseeing construction, with distilling operations expected to begin in late 2027.

How Big Will Eastern Light Be Among Kentucky’s Contract Distilleries?

Eastern Light’s planned production capacity of more than 125,000 barrels annually puts the project on a substantial scale within Kentucky’s contract-distilling industry.

To put that into perspective, Western Kentucky Distilling Co. in Beaver Dam has reported annual production capacity exceeding 50,000 barrels. That operation produces whiskey for its own brands as well as other companies.

Bardstown Bourbon Company operates on a larger scale, with approximately 289,000 barrels in reported annual production capacity. Its business includes both its own branded whiskey and custom production for other companies.

Eastern Light’s distinction is its focus on contract distilling. The company says its completed Morehead facility is expected to become Kentucky’s largest dedicated contract distillery, with a business model centered on customized whiskey production for independent spirits brands.

The word “dedicated” is important. Eastern Light is not claiming that its facility will have greater overall production capacity than every Kentucky distillery offering contract services.

Beyond its planned production capacity, Eastern Light intends to provide participating brands with product development, distilling expertise and a dedicated presence within its visitor experience.

For an independent whiskey company without its own distillery, that combination could provide both a production partner and a physical home for its brand in Kentucky.

Inside Eastern Light’s New Morehead, Kentucky, Distillery

The new facility is being developed on a 230-acre campus in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Rowan County.

The production building will cover approximately 50,000 square feet, with a 54-inch column still designed to support annual production exceeding 125,000 barrels.

The broader campus plans include:

• Whiskey maturation warehouses.
• A full bottling facility.
• Customized production services for independent whiskey brands.
• A dedicated bourbon tourism and visitor experience.
• Brand development and support services for participating whiskey companies.

The location is adjacent to the Morehead-Rowan County Airport and approximately four minutes from Interstate 64, providing transportation access for the distillery and its production partners.

Eastern Light is also located next to an Independent Stave Company cooperage, connecting the project with regional barrel manufacturing.

Three Things That Make Eastern Light Distilling Particularly Interesting

Beyond the latest financing announcement, Eastern Light’s production plans, regional supply network and previous development milestones reveal several noteworthy details about the future of the Morehead distillery.

1. Independent Whiskey Brands Can Bring Their Own Master Distiller

One of Eastern Light’s more distinctive offerings is the flexibility it intends to give whiskey brands using its production facilities.

According to the company’s published production approach, participating brands can work with master distiller Caleb Kilburn or bring their own master distiller to help develop their whiskey.

Eastern Light’s approach allows participating brands to make important production and business decisions involving:

• Grain selection and other ingredients.
• Whiskey recipes and production specifications.
• Distillation methods and product development.
• Maturation and production requirements.
• Brand identity and the path to market.

For independent whiskey makers, this model provides access to substantial production infrastructure while allowing them to maintain their own creative direction.

Eastern Light also plans to provide participating brands with a dedicated presence within its visitor experience.

That could allow a smaller whiskey company to share its story and products with visitors at a Kentucky distillery without having to finance and build an entirely separate production facility.

2. Cave Run Lake Water, Regional Grain and Nearby Barrel Manufacturing

Eastern Light’s location in Morehead is being developed around several natural and agricultural resources available in Eastern Kentucky.

In a June 2025 interview with Kentucky public radio station WEKU, CEO Cordell Lawrence discussed plans to incorporate regional ingredients and agricultural partnerships into the distillery’s operations.

The company’s supply and production plans include:

• Water: Eastern Light identifies Cave Run Lake as a source for its distilling operations.
• Grain: Lawrence discussed plans to source most of the distillery’s grain from a surrounding five-county area.
• Barrels: The campus is located near an Independent Stave Company cooperage, connecting the project with regional barrel manufacturing.
• Agricultural partnerships: Lawrence discussed arrangements with area farmers to accept leftover distilling mash for agricultural use.

These regional connections could allow the distillery’s economic impact to extend beyond the production and sale of whiskey.

Local farmers, barrel manufacturers, transportation providers and other businesses may benefit from the supply network needed to operate a large-scale whiskey production facility.

3. Eastern Light’s Planned Production Capacity Has Increased Since BourbonBlog’s Earlier Coverage

BourbonBlog has followed Eastern Light’s development since July 2023, when we first reported on the company’s plans to bring a major new bourbon production operation to Eastern Kentucky.

Our original reporting introduced Eastern Light’s plans to support independent whiskey makers while expanding Kentucky’s bourbon industry into the Morehead region.

In January 2024, BourbonBlog reported additional details about Eastern Light’s plans, including its 230-acre campus, approximately 50,000-square-foot distillery building, maturation warehouses, bottling facilities and proposed visitor experience.

When we covered the company’s groundbreaking in August 2024, Eastern Light’s announced production target was approximately 97,000 barrels annually.

The September 2026 announcement now describes a facility capable of producing more than 125,000 barrels each year.

That is an increase of more than 28,000 barrels over the approximate annual production figure reported in our 2024 coverage.

Importantly, these are planned production capabilities, not barrels currently being produced. Actual production will depend on the completion of the distillery and future customer demand.

The expected opening timeline has also changed.

At the 2024 groundbreaking, Eastern Light anticipated opening in late 2025. The company subsequently projected a 2026 opening, while its latest announcement now targets the start of distilling operations in late 2027.

The new financing milestone is significant because it advances a project that has undergone changes in both its development schedule and announced production capacity.

Why Eastern Light’s Financing Matters in Today’s Bourbon Market

Eastern Light’s announcement comes at a challenging time for portions of the whiskey industry, particularly businesses dependent on demand for new whiskey production and barrel inventories.

Contract distilleries depend on whiskey brands and other customers purchasing production capacity, filling barrels and, in many cases, entering longer-term maturation and storage arrangements.

That makes access to capital, production demand and long-term customer commitments important considerations for companies developing new contract-distilling facilities.

For example, BourbonBlog recently reported on Sazerac’s acquisition of Garrard County Distilling, a newer Kentucky whiskey production facility that entered receivership after production stopped in 2025.

Garrard County’s circumstances do not establish what will happen at Eastern Light. They do, however, illustrate the importance of financing and sustainable customer demand when developing large-scale whiskey production facilities.

Eastern Light’s newly announced financing package is a significant step toward completing its Morehead project, although future production volume and commercial performance will depend on operations and customer demand after the facility opens.

What Does the $60 Million Announcement Mean for the Larger Eastern Light Development?

The latest financing announcement focuses on the capital package secured to advance Eastern Light’s new distillery.

Those figures should not be confused. The newly announced financing package exceeds $60 million and supports construction of the distillery, while the earlier development figure described broader investment plans associated with Eastern Light’s campus.

The latest announcement does not provide a complete reconciliation of the earlier development budget and the newly secured financing package.

Eastern Light’s longer-term plans extend beyond the main distillery building to include maturation warehouses, bottling facilities, brand development services and a future visitor experience.

When Will Eastern Light Distilling Open?

Eastern Light currently expects to begin distilling operations in late 2027.

The company has not announced a confirmed public opening date for its planned visitor experience in the September 2026 financing announcement.

The next developments to watch include:

• Continued construction of the main distillery and supporting infrastructure.
• Installation and commissioning of the 54-inch column still.
• Additional announcements involving participating whiskey brands.
• Progress on whiskey maturation, bottling and visitor facilities.
• The anticipated start of distilling operations in late 2027.
